Joyent Weblog
Introducing Joyent Core

Starting in November, when you buy any core service from Joyent (whether its web hosting, Strongspace, or applications), we will bundle the other core services at no additional cost. For example, if you buy a $15/month web hosting account from our TextDrive service, you will also get the same tiers of service from Strongspace and our Applications. I’ll say it another way: $15 per month gets you web hosting (5gb, 5 databases, 5 domains, 5gb of bandwidth), online storage (5 users and 5gb), and email, calendar, address book, files and all the other applications in the pipeline (5 users and 5gb). The same will be true for our $50 and $100 per month tiers (with higher database, domain, bandwidth, user and storage allocations).
Services such as Bingo, Jill’s Team (coming in November), Containers, Container Storage and Scale will continue to be either add-ons to Joyents Core or stand-along offerings.
If you are an existing customer of a Joyent Core product, you will be receiving an email from us in the coming days explaining this upgrade and what it means for you at your current service level.
It’s a great time to be Joyent. Enjoy!

Holy crap!
— evariste 994 days ago #Hooray! I’ve been waiting for this…
— Jeff Wheeler 994 days ago #Keep it up guys! :)
— josue salazar 994 days ago #Nice. Many thanks.
— Eugene Chan 994 days ago #Nice!
I’m not sure if this has been asked before, but do you ever plan on offering cheaper plans for Bingo? I only need about 20GB of space and can’t see myself going over that.
— Rob 994 days ago #Rad. I was considering cancelling (TextDrive); I work too much to really need web hosting. Joyent’s mail & other apps look fantastic, though, can’t wait to try them out.
— Robert 994 days ago #I knew there was a reason I loved you guys so much. Actually, no… there were many reasons. But now there’s another one, and it may well be the best reason yet.
— Bob Aman 994 days ago #Wow! This was a little unexpected, but a pleasant surprise. I do want to know if you’ll be offering cheaper containers soon or if you are converting your existing hosting base over to a tiered container (with resources?) setup. Also, what about customers who have differing tiers of services? I have a business hosting account and a personal Strongspace account, will there be some kind of middleground?
Keep up the good work with Joyent.
— martinisoft 994 days ago #I used to be a TextDrive customer this summer but already had a MediaTemple account so I kinda cancelled it after a month or two because I did not use it at all.
However, the whole bundle looks really nice, mostly the Joyent part and I might be willing to give it a try, even if I don’t really know what I’ll be using it for.
I see that you have the same prices for TextDrive hosting (used to be 12$ per month, now 15$), but you still kept the setup fees, while Joyent and Strongspace don’t have a setup fee. Are you going to change anything about this?
Also, don’t you think that you’ll become overloaded by the number of people going in for the Joyent core?
— Andrei Maxim 994 days ago #So will existing customers get converted to these new plans automatically?
— Larry Wright 993 days ago #Joyent Core sounds fantastic!
— Pedro Cora 993 days ago #when i’ll this be available? I mean, if a sign up for strongspace right now (i was gonna do that anyway) I’ll be able to get the core later (hosting and the applications) or I should wait a bit?
Oops. Sorry for the last question, as I didn’t catch the last paragraph…
Another question though.. If we already have several services (ie Textdrive and Strongspace), will there be a way to tie the existing accounts together?
— Larry Wright 993 days ago #@Rob: smaller Bingo disks are coming.
@martinisoft: Containers are the future for us. We’re working with Sun and on our own new infrastructure product to redefine (shared) hosting.
@Andrei: the set-up fees will remain for the time being.
@Pedro: Joyent Core will be available in November. However, if you become a customer today, you’ll be automatically upgraded.
@Larry: Unfortunately, no. We can’t automatically consolidate accounts since many customers have multiple services that are in fact used by their own customers.
— David Young 993 days ago #So, could you explain to me exactly how you knew I was looking for a new host, some secure backup, and small team management? All at a reasonable price? You’re creeping me out!
November is perfectly in-line with when I’ll be able to switch things over, as well.
You guys are good.
— Ryan Miglavs 993 days ago #David: Thank you for the answer! I’ve just signed up for strongspace :)
— Pedro Cora 993 days ago #David, you do realise that you are going to make it impossible for your competitors like DreamHost to compete with yourselves? ;)
— Jacques Marneweck 993 days ago #Rock on folks. I’m diggin it (figuratively and literally).
— Nate 992 days ago #Wow… superb deal. I’m a very happy Textdrive customer and can’t wait to try out the Joyent core.
— Paul Livingstone 992 days ago #So how will this work for people who have a yearly TextDrive account? Free core service at whichever level is corresponding?
— Ben Cohen 991 days ago #this is very cool. any thoughts of ever MERGING the web hosting and Bingo services? would be very cool to have a mountable Bingo disk, with a public folder AND the ability to create HTML domains in there too. Would eliminate the need for FTP for web developers—we could just edit the live files…
— simplemedia 990 days ago #@Ben: Yes. You will get corresponding tiers on the other services.
@simplemedia: Also yes. Integration is coming.
— David Young 989 days ago #Yay! I had been considering cancelling; however, this is just too good to miss out on. Hooray for all the Joyent goodness! I’d say an extra $3 per month is pretty reasonable for all that.
— Alex Reid 988 days ago #I’ve been really happy with the status quo and can’t understand all the fuss. Ah but time rolls on and you might as well have the $3.00 as our grocery store…
— Rod 988 days ago #wow! there’s really nothing more to say! :-)
— chad 988 days ago #Hey – great news guys! My team looks forward to giving Connector a spin.
— Lorien Faulkner 987 days ago #Great!
— Graham 986 days ago #How would this work with the Mixed Grill special?
awesome! can’t wait to see how this all plays out
you guys are my recommended choice for all client work, thank you!
— simplemedia 986 days ago #So I just started paying the new $15 rate. How do I get access to the new goodies such as strongspace?
— Ben 962 days ago #Yeah, is there an ETA other than just November? I can’t wait to get my hand on Joyent…
— Ostertoaster 957 days ago #I’d also be interested in an ETA as it is now December. This really does look like a great offer.
— Eby 945 days ago #has anyone get there core details yet? i still haven’t.
— craigtmackenzie 909 days ago #Just got an email back from David as I was wondering too:
“We rolled out Joyent Core to the collaboration suite customers Friday. If you are a Strongspace customer, you’ll be getting Core Monday (1/8). Then we will be rolling out Core to the TextDrive customers. That should be done by end of this coming week.”
— ostertoaster 909 days ago #@Ostertoaster & all: “subject to delays and changes” ;) But we’re pretty excited about the new service!
— David Young 908 days ago #Should we still be excited?
If I signed up for a new account today would I have the promised Connector bundle? So.. if I’m paying the same, why aren’t I getting the same?
