Strongspace+SftpDrive

Joyent is pleased to announce that we have partnered with Magnetk to bring our common customers the power of SftpDrive and Strongspace. Now, when people buy SftpDrive, they get a 3gb Strongspace for free. Yeah, free. And Strongspace customers can buy SftpDrive for the discounted price of $24 (rather than $39).

SftpDrive allows customers to map an SSH server as a Windows drive letter.

Strongspace is the premier SSH server with multi-user capability for sharing and backing up files. We think Strongspace+SftpDrive make a winning combination. (Note: Macintosh version of SftpDrive coming in early 2007.)

    Good news.

Question though: why isn’t this also posted already in the Strongspace weblog? You seem to have forgotten about it—even the post about the SSH server key fingerprints change was late..

If you use Linux / Gnome, this functionality (mounting sftp directories as if they were hard disks) comes for free—all built in.

@Joe: not really. Yes, Linux/Gnome has the mounting capability, but SftpDrive does block edits. This allows your Strongspace storage to perform like local or network storage. That’s not true of other products that mount SSH directories, including Linux/Gnome.

I haven’t heard of a more inspired partnership since Joyent + TextDrive.

@JoeGnome doesn’t actually mount SFTP as a filesystem, it is a common extension certain classes of applications can access – but is not a volume that any process can easily access or a command shell user who wants to do a simple

    ls /Volumes/SftpDrive/jeff.strongspace.com

and get back the results in a terminal

The closest thing out there is the SSHFS module for FUSE, which is nice, but not all that reliable or fast.

3GB “Free”? Like forever, or what?

Man, keeping my 5GB Strongspace for $15/month just seems harder and harder. I really like the ability to rsync over SSH, but with everything else out there (and now this) I wonder why I spend the money :( (I only use it as a backup means, not an unlimited bandwidth-sharing means, I really wish Bingo supported SSH/rsync!)

@Brett: well, stayed tuned on Bingo. While the SftpDrive deal is great, we are planning on some great specials and cross-promotions for paying customers. Besides, your $15/month account is about to come with a side of Joyent applications and TextDrive webhosting. See here.

Jeff—yeah, that’s true. My bad. It’s good enough for me to be open up my strongspace folder in the file browser and drag files to and from it.

@David Young: as soon as you guys enable server-side crypto you will really have a killer product. worth paying double the non-crypto price for imo. so, when’s the eta :-)

@ Mr. Besonen: agreed. We’re waiting for this to be addressed in ZFS.

I agree with the server-side crypto, that would be amazing.

And don’t me wrong, I love what you guys are doing… I’m just torn between features of two of your products (SSH/rsync from Strongspace, larger storage from Bingo) and I’d be happy to trade out the ‘ease’ of WebDAV and give up unlimited bandwidth to have a great means to backup my data on you Thumpers. :)

Where do you get the SFTPDrive coupon from?

  13. Posted November 21, 2006 at 5:30 pm | Permalink

Dave I would love it if Bingo! Disk would work using SFTP.

  14. Posted November 21, 2006 at 7:04 pm | Permalink

@Jacques: not going to happen. SFTP requires system users. WebDAV does not, it writes to disk using the http process user. Having said that, we have some other plans in the works that would allow one to get to access Bingo, Strongspace, Joyent Files, or TextDrive hosting using WebDAV or SFTP. But again: not the same data. Make sense?

How do you order SFTPdrive to get the discount if you are, as in my case, a MixedGriller? Couldn’t find anything on the Sftpdrive page but would be interested to order.

Bijan Kafi log into your strongspace account. There is an option to to puchase SFTP Drive on the dashboard which vanished after I purchased a SFTP Drive license. The extra 3Gb strongspace coupon mentioned above has not arrived yet.

The 3GiB coupon applies if you buy from sftpdrive.com. If you buy a sftpdrive license from within your strongspace account you get the sftpdrive discount.

    Johann thanks for the update.

Is there anyway for a strongspace user to purchase additional sftpdrive licenses via Strongspace?

  19. Posted November 23, 2006 at 11:11 pm | Permalink

so far it’s one discount per account.
