This week there’s no real show. Ben, Jason and I have a short week here with the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday and Friday in the USA.
However, this being a holiday week, we thought it would be fun to have a “contest”. The show file for this week contains five songs (one from each of the musical “food groups”: rap/hip-hop, electronic, country, classical, and rock). The first five people who dial into the show phone (+1-415-226-1066) with the correct name of the track and the artist/composer (or the “lead” artist if the track is from a compilation) for all five songs will get a lifetime subscription to Joyent Core Plus. That’s a US$600 per year value, for life. Feel free to work with your friends and family.
When you call in, leave your answers, your full name, and an email address where you can be reached.
Winners are determined at the sole discretion of Joyent. Joyent employees are not eligible to win.
Have fun.
Here’s a direct link to the mp3.
Update: we have 5 winners. Harry, Arnaud, Nicholas, Tyler and Mike. The winners will receive information from us next week with details about your plans.
Correct answers:
- Remind Me (Röyksopp from Melody A.M.)
- Ashes to Ashes (David Bowie from Scary Monsters)
- If (Dolly Parton from Halos and Horns covering Bread…she also does Stairway to Heaven on this album)
- Ed-ucation (Dr. Dre from 2001, performed by Eddie Griffin)
- Floe (Philip Glass, from Glassworks) (Lot’s of answers from “Koyaanisqatsi” which quotes Floe, but it is not the same.)
Thanks for all the participation!

I have them all but the last. I feel like I’ve seen a video with that music in it and I’m racking my brain but… nothin’.
Me too. Got them all but for the classical song and I know I heard it somewhere before.
I think I have them. I called in.
was to shy to call in and i guess there already were at least 5 people who called and got the correct answers.
i cant wait for the right answers to be published…id love to know how many i got right.
the 5th track was a bit harder to find than the other 4 because there were no lyrics…so no google foo opportunity there
but a friend of mine got me on the right direction i guess.
@Harry: Ding, ding, ding. We have the first winner.
Is anyone else getting the answering machine? Bugger, I know them too!
@David: Awesome, thanks!
@ichigo, @john, I left my answers on the machine.
Hmm… the phone machine keeps cutting me off mid-answers. Any update on winners?
Yes: the call in number is a VOIP voicemail box.
Ah okay thanks David! I had to speed talk but got all my answers in and my phone number. If you need clarification please give me a ring or e-mail with the provided address, cheers!
awesome harry. congrats!
)
Nice, congrats Harry!
hmm, i called around 4:45 and haven’t heard back. Does that mean I wasn’t correct?
Clarification: “artist/composer” means the person performing (if its a cover) or the person who wrote the music if there’s no signing. Tyler…
Hmmm, does this mean I need to leave another message?
@Tyler: yes. I tried to call, but couldn’t make out your number.
@Arnaud: Ding, ding, ding. We have another winner.
Whoa, excellent ! Finally a late night that’s paying off ! I never thought you would understand me with my poor accent. (so, that’s my email address in case you can’t decypher it).
I’ve got to send you a gift for that, I feel bad.
@Arnaud: I couldn’t figure out the email address.
You can IM me on AIM at davidpaulyoung.
Got it I think… Left a message…
@Tyler: Ding, ding, ding. We have another winner.
That last one took a lot of brain-wracking and stress, so even if I didn’t get it, it was fun…
Congrats Arnaud!
@Nicholas: That last one spent up all the rest of my brain’s power for the day, I’m going home and taking a shower to cool it down.
@Nicholas: Ding, ding, ding. We have the fourth winner.
That was definately tough but mine is in. Wasn’t sure if the beeping on the line was on my end or not and whether the mailbox cut me off.
@Stacy: I got the beeping too, I think it has something to do with the VoIP. Did you press # at the end of the message to confirm the end of the message?
Arrrggh!!
I know all of them easily, but that last! Theres’ no words to Google!
No i did not press #. Does my message not go through then?
OK… resubmitted with hopefully the right ones this time if Stacy didn’t just win…
@Stacy: What I found was after pressing # you can either press 3 or hang up to send the message. I’m not sure if hanging up before pressing # sends the message, that’s a question David would have to answer.
Mine probably did not even go through but I’ve called twice and will feel like a knob calling a third time. If I can’t figure out the phone system I probably do not deserve it.
@Mike: Ding, ding, ding. We have the fifth and final winner. Thanks for all the participation.
Nice Job Mike. So what were the answers?
I’ve updated the post with the answers. @Stacy: you were close!
@Mike: how do you spell your last name?
Damn. I was going off the DVD and assumed that the soundtrack was a re-recording or your version was an alternate of the same song. Was fun none the less.
I just wanted to mention that Dolly Parton should die for covering “If” by Bread. David Gates wrote that song about his late father.
I was wrong on the classical track. thought it was from Yann Tiersen (The one who did the Amelie and Good Bye Lenin Soundtracks).
)
Argh…why do these things always happen when I’m asleep?
Thanks for the Erlend Øye song, by the way. I really liked “Remind Me” so I grabbed some of his other stuff, I’ve been listening to it non-stop for two days.
@David: Monan (Sorry for the delay… Holidays and all…)@Stacy: Thanks… I kept changing my mind on what the last one was… but then I finally found the right fit… Made the same mistake a couple of time…
