Most of my experience with OS X Server (and Xserves) is in the small business market, competing with things like Microsoft Small Business Server — addressing the local area filesharing, network logon, etc. for offices of fewer than 50 people.
I know a number of design firms that are employing it successfully in that type of a capacity.
I definitely wouldn’t consider it an on-par competitor with Linux/FreeBSD/Solaris for the Internet-scale datacenter.
