Hello Joyeurs
Having now spent a little over 4 weeks as the new VP Marketing at Joyent, I have to say that I am very excited about where the company is going in 2009. The Zeus announcement is only the beginning. Over the next several months you will see exciting new products, valuable new partner relationships and many more steps that will take us all towards realizing the profound value of an open and loving cloud.
Joyent will be launching a new website that will combine and consolidate the tremendous resource and information base that the company has created over the past 4 years or so. We will continue to build on the highly successful funded (free) accelerators for Facebook and OpenSocial developers (generously sponsored by Sun Startup Essentials Program). We will be putting much more emphasis on Joyent’s vast enterprise-scale product offering. And finally, we will do our best to make our communication an inclusive process.
So, as I work with my Joyent colleagues to set the Joyeur Blog editorial calendar, I will ask that if you have a specific topic you would like addressed please let us know by commenting or tweeting @joyent on twitter. Joyent is fortunate to have many technology experts that I can draw on to get your questions answered and topics covered. We will try to get to all suggestions. We will either contact you directly or use a subsequent post to address your topic.

My first suggestion: while I would love to see more regular postings on the blog, I’m not sure the right answer is to have an “editorial calendar”. Editorial calendars are for periodicals, not blogs.
That said, I’d love to hear more about the philosophy of the loving cloud, as well as product-specific blog posts that go deep into specific aspects of Accelerators, Zeus and Reasonably Smart.
Finally, I’d really like to see a change in tone in outbound communications from Joyent. I’ll preface this by saying that I am a happy customer and have never had any major issues. But, I read the blog and the forum posts. More often than not, the response to reasonable questions is either no response or extreme arrogance. Given the background of some of the responders, one can understand the nature of the tone but it is inexcusable for representatives of the company. Joyent was founded by and employs really smart people. They have interesting and thought-provoking viewpoints. However, that can be easily overshadowed if people feel they are being looked down upon or ignored. Joyent is better than that.

Good question, as a happy customer I’d like to suggest the following:
First off Joyent likes to claim that Joyent scales more/better/with more arrogance/with a more open platform than <insert name of other vendor>, but there not good examples of how anyone would scale a Z application. Compare this to AWS where there are a zillion step by step images/tutorials/articles showing how I can build a fail safe XYZ cluster in only a few minutes. The blog would be an ideal place to teach people how you would “scale” on Joyent – explain the steps and the resources need i.e. (the following are made up examples) pay $5,000 for consulting services, or hire a systems engineer, or following one of these five tutorials. You see these types of questions in the forum also – i.e. I know Joyent “scales” but how would I do it or what should I plan for?
Second, I would like more posts that show you step by step how to do something and achieve a understandable result such as http://www.joyeur.com/2008/04/24/dtrace-mysql-ganglia-and-digging-for-solutions. I contrast that post to this one: http://www.joyeur.com/2008/10/10/joyent-labs-sun-grid-engine-on-joyent-accelerators which really doesn’t give me an example of why I would care about “Sun Grid Engine.” If you are going to talk about a grid engine, provide a reproducible result of how to say render a map across two servers or something. I skip over posts that don’t really illustrate why I care or provide an example of why I should care.
Really less interested in a blog than ya’ll keeping your documentation up to date. However if your going to blog please keep it technical, marketing people tend to get to into talking to other marketing people.
David gave some talks awhile back on the economics of using VPS vs Co-loing your own servers, I found those immensely valuable in explaining to the the money people why we’re going with one instead of the other.
Discussions on Scaling with your systems would be quite useful and talking about what your zones are designed for is also useful. For instance I recently figured out that accelerators are very RAM rich and very CPU poor ( at least they have more RAM than respective CPU ). This makes sense for certain types of applications like Rails which consume huge amounts of memory and don’t actually do much but for lighter fast apps, not so much. Would like to hear about why things are done the way they are before I have to figure it out myself.
Also would love to hear more about your product offerings. Why would I give you $100 a month per accelerator for Big IP instead of doing haproxy, or squid and when is a good time to cut from one to the other. What is this Pod thing ya’ll have going on? How are you peered? Fact is ya’ll are pretty opaque.
Also interested in hearing about the virtues of Solaris and why ya’ll went that way. It can be difficult sell to the plethora of linux users out there who just want to to type apt-get.
I’d like to see a post explaining the status of the Connector. Although there is an occasional commit, it seems that its development has stagnated… https://dev.joyent.com/projects/connector/changesets
Should we ever expect the promised features like email aliases, etc?
Also, an update on the status of Strongspace and its replacement (if there is one) would be great!
I agree with Someguy. Starting off with some clear communication around existing products (Connector and Strongspace) would be great. And then you can really dig into the marketing stuff around why I’d pay for an Accelerator and how I’d scale well and the benefits of Joyent’s cloud.
I actually enjoyed QuadCore immensely (despite the mic issues).
I agree with the others on here as well… more communication about the status of existing products and plans for updates.
On the technical side, I’d like to hear more about security in the cloud as well as caching strategies. Also, more Solaris goodness is always welcome.
